| Frank’s part of local folklore
One day a helicopter from Fort Hood landed in the parking lot. The crew ordered 45 cheeseburgers to take on maneuvers, she said. I only had one girl helping me that day, said Mrs. Smith. We were running around like crazy cooking burgers. We knew then we had been discovered. Franks Lakeview Inn In 1955 the Corps wanted the Smiths corner location back to build offices for the Little River Project. They gave Frank his choice of land in the area, Mrs. Smith said. Frank was a visionary. He liked the view from that location overlooking the lake. Mrs. Smith said they built a second establishment on the hilltop and named it Franks Lakeview Inn Restaurant. At one end they constructed a three-bedroom home where they lived. We had some cabins across from the restaurant we rented for $5 and $10 a night, she said.
Transcript: Top Governors Evaluate '08 Candidate Field on 'FNS'
Joining us now to talk about those issues and the presidential race are four leading governors — Tim Pawlenty, Republican from Minnesota; Mark Sanford, Republican from South Carolina; Tim Kaine, Democrat from Virginia; and Jon Corzine, Democrat from New Jersey. Governors, welcome to "FOX News Sunday." Good to have you here. Let's start with a look at your states and how they may vote in November. Governor Pawlenty, Minnesota has the longest streak in the nation of going for a Democrat. The last Republican to win in Minnesota was Richard Nixon back in 1972, but in 2004 Kerry beat Bush by only 51-48. So, question: What are the chances that Minnesota finally goes Republican this year? .
Hillary’s Looming Electability Crisis
But unfortunately the 800 superdelegates, the party leaders, will decide the nomination, and the Democratic penchant for seizing defeat from the jaws of victory doesn't bode well. Maybe they will wake up and smell the coffee. We will see. It's too bad that tomorrow is so definitive because Obama is clearly on an upward trajectory while Hillary is sinking. But it may be too late for that to be reflected in the votes. My only hope is that the superdelegates aren't bound to their endorsements and can switch all the way up to the convention. That's IF Hillary doesn't get the grand total. The good news is that unlike the Republicans, the Democrats allot by vote distribution in each district, not winner-take-all. We live in interesting times. DaSparky, I've never held my nose and I'm not about to start now.
Vote for sales tax is a vote for children, superintendents say
MARION — A vote in favor of a sales tax referendum on Feb. 5 is a vote for the children of Williamson County say the school superintendents of Marion, Herrin, Carterville, Johnston City and Crab Orchard. The quintet called a press conference Wednesday at the Unit 2 office in Marion to divulge details of the tax referendum and how each district will benefit for years to come should the measure pass by a simple majority vote."Our goal here today is to inform the people of this county," said the group’s lead spokesman, Tim Bleyer, Carterville superintendent. "We want to provide good, honest information."Bleyer said the purpose of the tax — a 1-percent increase on sales tax would apply to all purchased items except groceries, state-titled vehicles and prescription drugs — is to allow the five districts to build, equip and finance school facilities."By securing the means to locally fund Williamson County school districts’ construction and abatement projects, voters will be in the forefront of all counties in Illinois," Bleyer said.
Senate Caves into Pressure - Won't Block Immunity for Illegal Spying
Washington, D.C. - Despite the strong leadership of senators like Chris Dodd and Russ Feingold, the Senate failed today to block provisions of a pending surveillance bill that would grant immunity to phone companies that assisted the government in illegal electronic surveillance. The Dodd-Feingold amendment to remove immunity from the FISA Amendments Act (FAA) failed in a 31 to 67 vote, and final Senate passage of the FAA is expected later today. "Immunity for telecom giants that secretly assisted in the NSA's warrantless surveillance undermines the rule of law and the privacy of every American," said EFF Senior Staff Attorney Kevin Bankston. "Congress should let the courts do their job instead of helping the administration and the phone companies avoid accountability for a half decade of illegal domestic spying." After the Senate passes the FAA, it will need to negotiate with the House over differences between the FAA and the RESTORE Act, the House's own surveillance bill passed in November.
