ALLIANCE Browsing a Food & Wine magazine a few months back, I noticed a feature on homemade gnocchi. "Sounds fun to make," I thought, flipping pages to locate the article. If you've never eaten homemade gnocchi, you are missing a real treat. Many folks of Italian heritage can attest to the tastiness of the dumplings, made with a dough that includes mashed potatoes. The olive-size, pastalike pillows generally are boiled and served with sauce such as tomato sauce, pesto, or garlic butter and Parmesan cheese. Store-bought gnocchi is widely available at supermarkets in fresh and frozen form, but scratch gnocchi are especially light and airy. I scanned the article, and was totally turned off. Step after daunting step stretched across the pages. Not only was the recipe exhausting just to read, it sounded as much fun as installing a garbage disposal.
