With no immigration reform in sight, the move is the government's latest effort to block illegal workers' access to U.S. jobs, something that has at least one union in Oregon crying foul. Felisa Hagins, the political director for Service Employees International Union Locals 503 and 49, said the decision makes companies the fall guys for a problem the government has sat on for years and failed to solve. "We are not against employer sanctions, but this strategy is like painting the house when the roof is on fire," Hagins said. "This administration has tried to blame a lot of people for its own lack of immigration reform, and now employers are its next target." A second rule is intended to encourage companies to more rigorously scrutinize workers, especially when discrepancies arise with Social Security numbers they use.

Political background to the CPE protests
We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle. In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to reform the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is reforming Frances labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it wasan attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.
UK 'missed chance to build up £450bn sovereign wealth fund'
Norway has used its North Sea revenues to build up a sovereign wealth fund, while Middle Eastern states have recently used their funds to take stakes in banks that have run into trouble as a result of the global credit crunch. John Hawksworth, PWC's chief economist, said that even had the UK saved only half its North Sea receipts it would have a fund bigger than that of Kuwait (£213bn) and not far behind Norway's £322bn fund. It would, however, still only been worth just over half Abu Dhabi's £875bn fund. Hawksworth added that oil money allowed taxes to be kept lower than would have been possible without either rising national debt or sharp cuts in public spending as a share of the economy. "Since oil revenues were greatest in the first half of the 1980s, this was also when this potential effect was greatest.
Expected revenues fall short in Rochester
All you've got to do is look around this city, look around the nation, and see what's happening." Ward 1 Councilor Ray Varney said he expects the idea to be discussed at next month's meeting. "You've got to somehow get some additional revenue or reduce expenditures if you want to offset what you know to be losses." The city administration hasn't called for a budget freeze, but the option hasn't been taken off the table. "We need to determine where we're at and really evaluate things," Finance Director Brian LeBrun said Thursday. "I'm not willing to use that term at the time, but it might happen." To avoid going that route, LeBrun is going through budgets "with a fine-tooth comb" to see where there may be additional revenue or where there can be savings.
Inside Firefox 3's Latest Beta Update, Part 1
This takes it one step further to prevent any kind of exploit or attack against the browser, which is really great," he added. Ease of Use Users may also find the new download manager more convenient to use. Mozilla has revamped the download manager to make it easier to find downloaded files, expanding search functionality to include searches for the Web site from which the file was downloaded. Time remaining on active downloads will also now be shown in the status bar. Mozilla has also improved the way in which podcasts and videocasts can be associated with playback tools and how Firefox integrates with Mac computers. The new Firefox theme enables toolbars, icons and other elements of the user interface to appear as though they are a native OS X application.
In the Mideast, faint rays of hope
They are, in a delicious twist, becoming the best de facto allies of the West...." Missing from Wright's account, however, is the international community's influence. In 2005, Lebanese protesters gathered in unprecedented numbers to demand that Syria end its 29-year military presence. Within months, it did. Wright cheers "the first broad popular movement to demand sweeping change and get it." But she doesn't mention the immense pressure the United Nations put on Syria to withdraw during that time, even though in this and other cases, foreign powers partly set the parameters for local activists' success. Wright's real interest remains the region's home-grown reformers. "What is most inspiring is not the dreams the outside world has for the people of the Middle East," she writes.
Junior's new team raring to go
He never introduced me to people, so for him to be doing that, I figured there was something important going on — some reason I needed to know this guy," Earnhardt said. Gordon and Earnhardt have been close friends since Dale Sr.'s death, although most of Earnhardt's fans don't support Gordon, a four-time champion. Gordon is thrilled to have Dale Jr. on his team, which also features two-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson and Casey Mears. "I really applaud the move that he made because, you know, he could have been just kind of sitting comfy at DEI and just have his normal pressure of stepping it up," Gordon said. "Now he goes to a team that's won a lot of championships, won back-to-back championships, and so now it's like, 'OK, this is the true test for Junior.' And I don't think that's necessarily fair, in a way because, you know, it still takes time for the team to gel." Not necessarily.
