Castro to Relinquish Cuban Presidency

Prior to the Soviet Union's collapse, support from the Kremlin sustained Cuba as a socialist outpost on the doorstep of the United States, and placed Castro and his country in the middle of events central to the Cold War, including the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban missile crisis.

Those long-standing animosities colored Tuesday's announcement and U.S. reaction to it.

Castro said leaving office was a hard step for him given all that his "adversary" -- the United States -- had done over the years to try to get rid of him, including assassination plots.

President Bush, asked about the news in a public appearance during his trip to Africa, said: "The question really should be what does this mean for the people in Cuba. They are the ones who suffered under Fidel Castro."

Bush said he hoped this would be "the beginning of a democratic transition for the people of Cuba ...

LAST night after her uncontested "victory" in Florida, Hillary Clinton was introduced by... Alcee Hastings, removed from by the Senate in 1998 after impeachment from* in the House, under a heavy cloud of suspicion of bribery when he was a federal judge. (A bit of the colourful background here.) Bill Clinton pardoned Mr Hastings' alleged co-conspirator on his last day in office.

Doesn't Ms Clinton have any slightly less dodgy-looking Floridian backers? Or if slightly suspect they must be, ones whose former associates had not been pardoned from federal prison by her husband?

Well, That's Done

Unlikely this year to fill both holes with one new guy. The Giants need two more players. And, if in the process of getting them, they can dump a big chunck of Ray's salary, so much the better.

Israel looks to cut Gaza links

Egyptian officials said the border would eventually "return to normal," and Egyptian police prevented Gazans from moving deeper into Egypt.Gazans had hoped the temporary border opening would become permanent.Israel has said since the 2005 pull-out that it should not be considered an occupying power in Gaza. But it has maintained control of Gaza's northern and eastern border crossings and its airspace and coastal waters. The blockade Israel has imposed on the Strip since the Hamas takeover became almost complete a week ago after rocket attacks against southern Israel.Yossi Alpher, former director of the Jaffee Centre for Strategic Studies in Tel Aviv, said Mr Vilnai's statement was more than his own personal views. "This reflects the (Israeli] government's wishful thinking" he said. He said severing all Israel's links would depend on Egyptian readiness to leave the border open and "would take a long time even if Egypt was willing to take Gaza off Israel's hands."Egyptian officials angrily dismissed Mr Vilnai's proposal.

Obesity, genetics, and responsibility.

"Nature tops nurture in childhood obesity," a wire story announced last week. The article's first sentence reported that according to a new study, "Diet and lifestyle play a far smaller role than genetic factors in determining whether a child becomes overweight."

I've read and written a lot about obesity lately, and one thing I've learned, especially from my mistakes, is that genetics and "lifestyle" are rarely that simple. In this case, their relationship is particularly complicated. Obesity is indeed genetic. And diet and lifestyle are crucial to controlling it.

Genetic propensity to gain weight is hardly a new idea. Previous studies have suggested that adult body-mass index (BMI) is 55 percent to 85 percent heritable. But those studies left two questions unanswered.

Britney Spears

Children crave structure and discipline which Jamie Spears is dishing out like Bruce Lee if he ran a day care for 26-years-old. I rock at metaphors:

Britney's father is not allowing her to drink alcohol, see her friends and insists that she prays in her pajamas every night. Jamie has also been encouraging his daughter to teach childrens' classes at her favorite hangout, Millennium Dance Complex.

But Britney's fighting back and plotting a return to her care-free days of acting like a batshit moron in public:

So far, Britney has been compliant with her dad's rules, but sources tell OK! that the singer is in the midst of plotting her revenge. Britney has been sending secret text messages to her former party pal and cousin Alli Sims and is reportedly working with her and Sam Lutfi to try to oust her father as her conservator.
