Ramos wins another cup, and Tottenham's first trophy in nine years
The Spaniard's strict regime and ruthless methodology, including ordering his bloated players to diet, has taken Spurs to heights unimaginable during the first troubled weeks of the season. But in triumph, he has eased the restrictions. "It's not a particularly strict diet. It's quite a nice diet and allows them to sometimes eat and drink out of control," Ramos said. "And I've already had a drink with the players." Now Europe is the priority, with PSV Eindhoven facing Tottenham in the UEFA Cup's round of 16 and Ramos already dreaming of the final in May. "The team has been improving little by little in terms of security and the confidence they feel," Ramos said. "This game today has simply reaffirmed that. "They have improved their general posture like in games against Manchester United and Arsenal.

Letters to the editor (Feb. 4)
I do not know the true condition of city finances. But I do not want to receive additional services now just to find out, later, that taxes and fees must increase to fund these new services. Before the City Council and Budget Commission approve any service increases, they should be able to assure citizens that the increased services can be funded on an ongoing basis without future tax and fee increases. If they cannot, then the new-found revenue should be saved to offset future cost increases in base-level services.Rolland Baxter, CorvallisTo help Hillary, Bill should stay homeThe recent Opinion page piece about Bill Clinton's campaigning antics being "unbecoming to an ex president" ("Bill too tough for Hill," Jan. 29) seems to me to miss the point entirely.Quite a lot of his past behavior belongs firmly in that category, quite as much as his recent purple-faced rants in apparent support of the much-reviled Hillary. However, I feel it is time to share the real truth about Bill, which everyone seems to have missed. He doesn't actually want Mrs.

A Growth Maven's New Favorite: Gold
NOT MUCH ESCAPES THE ATTENTION OF THIS wise and wily investor. Near visionary in his ability to identify trends and capitalize on them, Joseph McNay has made a lot of people and institutions wealthy in the 40-plus years he's been plying the investment trade. He manages more than $3 billion at Essex Investment Management in Boston, a firm he founded, including its flagship long-short fund and a natural-resources fund. One of the all-time greats of growth investing, McNay is now pounding the table for, of all things, gold. Attention must be paid. Barron's: Are we in a recession or are we perhaps talking ourselves into one? McNay: We certainly are in an economic slowdown, and my personal opinion is that we are in the early phases of a recession. Whether we are in a recession or not is irrelevant because we are slowing down, and results are becoming more negative.
A religion for the 21st century: Scientology
Scientology has never been more relevant than today," said David Miscavige, an important leader in the church, in an introductory address given at a celebrity event in Los Angeles a few years ago that was videotaped for the public."Man lives in a world increasingly interested in science, and yet even with all that science, there is an abyss, a chasm of humanity ... the answer cannot be found in chemicals or science ... we think new answers are needed. People need real solutions to real problems, and Scientology offers that help ... and inherent in that is that each of us takes responsibility for themselves and the world."Scientologists estimated that there are 3,000 Scientology churches, missions, related organizations and group ministries in more than 133 countries.According to the Religion Newswriters Association, a nonprofit trade association founded in 1949 to advance the professional standards of religion reporting, Scientology has been investigated in the past by certain governmental agencies around the world, in part because of its practice of charging fees to members in order for them to receive auditing.
