| Who ensures the safety of pet food?
The FDA and state feed program officials regulate the industry, but it's largely self-policing. Pet food companies set their own standards for testing raw ingredients and finished products, said Greg Aldrich, an animal nutritionist with Pet Food & Ingredient Technology of Topeka, and a consultant to pet food companies. They may test raw ingredients themselves, or they may rely on suppliers to show that raw ingredients are up to snuff, said Sakharam Patil of SK Patil & Associates, a consulting firm for pet and human food. Typically, companies will take samples from random lots of raw products and test them. They look to make sure the product is what it is supposed to be, that it's free of foreign objects, that bacteria levels are low and that it's free of dangerous mycotoxins, poisons produced by molds or fungi, said Peter Clark, a food-processing consultant in Oak Park, Ill.
Backgrounder: Clay Point salmon farm
NZ King Salmon, in association with Te Atiawa, was first issued a marine farm licence for a Clay Point salmon farm in 1994. The licence was not immediately brought to production because the company decided to focus on adding value to its product attracting market pull, rather than pushing volume growth which inevitably targets commodity markets and the risk of price pressure inherent in such markets.. More recently consumer demand for salmon has been on the increase reflecting a global trend away from processed foods towards nutrition and healthy eating. New Zealand sales by value increased by 20 per cent alone in 2007 so three years ago NZ King Salmon began discussions with Te Atiawa as to how new salmon production could be effected at the Clay Point licence. The location Clay Point is on the northern tip of the Marlborough Sounds, north east of French Pass.
Bobby Jindal Sworn in as Louisiana Governor
BATON ROUGE, La. Bobby Jindal, the 36-year-old son of Indian immigrants, was sworn in Monday as Louisiana's 55th governor and immediately moved to make good on a campaign promise, saying he will call a February special legislative session on ethics to help cleanse the hurricane-battered state's corrupt image. Louisiana's first nonwhite governor since Reconstruction, the nation's first elected Indian-American governor and the nation's youngest sitting governor, Jindal pledged to overcome the stereotype of the state as a haven for cronyism and self-serving politicians. "We have the opportunity -- born of tragedy but embraced still the same -- to make right decades of failure in government," Jindal said, referencing hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which hit the state in 2005.

Not her own I hope. I don't have the resolve for all this. Just every so often, when I'm sick of their sallow, supine bodies and the way the smaller one clutches the backless remote controls like holy amulets - even taking them with him to the loo in case his brother seizes power - I switch off their favoured doom-porn, Air Crash Investigation or Anatomy of a Grizzly Attack, and try to boot them outside. Only to see them graze idly at the computer instead. It is no small challenge being the in-house Ofcom, diligently monitoring screen minutes: adding a half hour of MSN to Doctor Who and 20 minutes on SuperMario Galaxy. Does squinting at music videos on your iPod nano's teeny screen count? What about Tetris on your mobile? Is a podcast cause for concern? Yet what exactly are we worried about here? Of course, the "toxic childhood" Jeremiahs are always plucking random figures from the air: Aric Sigman, of the British Psychological Society, declared that the Government should prescribe telly guidelines - two hours for seven to twelve-year-olds - just as it issues, say, a recommended sodium intake.

Stretching the tournament scheduled across the calendar and should make a less rigorous life for anglers who fish both the BASS and FLW tours. Some anglers who have stuck strictly with BASS may also compete on the FLW tour. The late February or March date for the Classic should put anglers on better fishing opportunities than the late-summer dates have. In this time slot, the Classic will take place prior to the start of the regular tournament season. Most likely the Classic sites will be in warm-weather areas. BASS has not announced the location of the 2006 Classic, but this year's event will be in Pittsburgh. .
Test prep-aration
Ken Leonard didn't want to wait, not for the Illinois High School Association nor for his own school administration. It was time to do something, he thought, and he decided to tackle the issue. So five years ago, Leonard, one of the state's most successful football coaches, launched a drug-testing program at his school, Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin. Every football player, freshmen through seniors, is tested before each season. ''We are the only sport in our school that has drug testing,'' Leonard said. ''Î did it to help kids to have a reason to say no, to help kids who might need help. We didn't have a problem, but I didn't want one -- and sometimes you don't know if you have a problem. ''So instead of talking about helping kids and waiting for someone to get caught, we wanted to do something about it.
